Dyslexia Assessment for Children
At Ryburn Dyslexia, we provide child-centred dyslexia assessments for children aged 8–16 across Calderdale and surrounding areas.
Our assessment process is designed around your child. We work with you, your child and their school to understand their individual strengths, difficulties and learning needs, making sure the assessment is as comfortable and supportive as possible.
Is a dyslexia assessment right for my child?
You may be considering an assessment if your child is experiencing ongoing difficulties with reading, spelling or writing despite support at school and at home.
You may also notice that your child is working very hard but becoming frustrated, losing confidence or finding literacy tasks significantly more difficult than other areas of learning.
Every child is different, so there isn't one set of signs that means a child is dyslexic. A conversation about your child's individual strengths and difficulties is often the best place to start.
What happens during a dyslexia assessment?
1. Initial chat with a parent or guardian
Sometimes the biggest decision is simply taking the first step towards an assessment. An initial chat gives you the opportunity to talk through your concerns, ask questions and understand what a dyslexia assessment involves.
We can explain the assessment process, answer any questions you may have and help you decide whether an assessment is the right next step for your child.
2. Consent and information
If you decide to go ahead, there are a few straightforward forms to complete, including consent and our terms of service.
3. Background information
We'll collect relevant background information from you and your child's school. This helps us understand your child's development, education and learning experiences and provides important context for the dyslexia assessment.
Information can be provided through an online form or in person, whichever is easiest for you.
4. The dyslexia assessment
The assessment usually takes place at your child's school and can take between half a day and a full day, depending on the assessments required.
The process is child-centred and child-led. We make sure your child has opportunities for breaks throughout the assessment, and where the assessment takes place at school, they can maintain their usual break and lunchtime routine.
5. Your assessment report
Following the assessment, we'll provide verbal or written feedback about how the day went.
We'll then take time to analyse the assessment results, interpret the findings and prepare a comprehensive report.
Where a full diagnosis of dyslexia is appropriate, the report includes a detailed explanation of the assessment findings together with recommendations to support your child at school and at home.
6. Support after the assessment
Receiving a detailed assessment report can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when you're trying to understand what happens next. That's why our support doesn't stop when we send your report.
We offer follow-up calls or meetings to help you understand the recommendations and work out the best next steps for your child. Where appropriate, this may also include speaking with your child's teacher or attending SEND reviews.
We don't believe in producing a report and walking away. We're here to support you and your family beyond the assessment.
The cost of a full diagnostic dyslexia assessment is £450 payable before the assessment date.
